HB 2260 – Voter Registration; Student Addresses

This Bill hits really close to home. Being from a college town (Ithaca, NY) I’d see these liberally prone professors sway the student body to vote that way. As there were more students & faculty then the entire population of the town, I saw the place I grew up slowly deteriorate. If only this law was a reality the place I loved would probably be very similar to the way it was when I was growing up & I’d probably be raising my kids there today. Now factories are ghost towns, jobs have left by the thousands, and drugs have over taken the streets in this welfare state.

Flagstaff Daily Sun – PHOENIX — Bill denies student voting using dorms as residences.  When Rep. Bob Thorpe ran for reelection in November, the precincts in and around the Northern Arizona University campus produced some of his lowest vote tallies.   Thorpe won his race anyway, with strong showings in the largely Republican Gila and Navajo counties portion of his legislative district.  NOW THE FLAGSTAFF LAWMAKER WANTS TO KEEP STUDENTS FROM VOTING LOCALLY AT ALL UNLESS THEY HAPPEN TO HAVE BEEN LIVING THERE WITH THEIR FAMILIES BEFORE THEY WENT TO SCHOOL.  HB 2260 WOULD MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO USE A DORMITORY ADDRESS “OR OTHER TEMPORARY COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY ADDRESS” LIKE AN APARTMENT TO REGISTER TO VOTE. Instead, ARIZONA LAW WOULD PRESUME THESE TO BE “A TEMPORARY ADDRESS with intent to return to some other permanent address.”   What Thorpe proposes would have statewide effect on candidate, bond and initiative elections in communities with public and private colleges with students in residence on or near the campus in several parts of the state.   And he proposes in HB 2255 to make it illegal for individuals and businesses who do not reside in Arizona to contribute money in support or opposition to ballot measures.

Letter to Senators

Dear Senator ______________:
As a concerned constituent, I urge you to support bill: HB 2260.

This would remove the ability of colleges to influence voting and legislation through students that are only temporarily in an area, while attending college.

I also urge you to support bill: HB2255 making it illegal for individuals and businesses who do not reside in Arizona to contribute money in support or opposition to ballot measures.

This would give the say so, back to the community that lives and resides in this area.

This would be a great measure for the entire country.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Sincerely,
